decking - do i need to filler

the balustrade around my decking has the odd natural wood crack in. is it best to leave this or fill it? the builder told me to fill it. the carpenter or came the next day started laughing and said its a natural product and not to do anything apart from put some decking stain on it to add protection.

who is right?

Depends how big the crack is. You could use an exterior filler of a woody colour and splash the stain on top, if you like.

if i just used the stain and nothing else would it be ok? depth wise you could prob fir a £1 coin into it

It'll be alright. Should have been rejected before installation really, for cosmetic reasons.
