I'm not sure if everyone is aware of this but there seems to be lots of post up recently about new decking.

Please be aware that as of 1st october 2008. You now required planning permission if any of the following criteria in met:

• Where the deck is situated within 20 metres of a highway.
• Where the deck platform is more than 300mm (1 ft) from the ground (effective 1 October 2008).
• If any part of the deck construction exceeds 3m in height.
• If the structure would affect the amenity value or privacy of neighbouring properties.
• If the deck is attached to a listed building or situated in a conservation area or National Park.
• If the deck area covers more than 50% of the total garden area.

Building Regulations (ie the involvement of building control)
should be assumed to apply to every deck structure
requiring planning permission.

Who makes up these ridiculous rules.
My decking is built on a slope so of course one end is over 1 foot from the ground but that is the end with balastrades.
20 metres from a highway? why should that be a problem?

Because John Prescott when he was DPM decided it to be so.
