I am assembling the sub frame (6x2) for garden decking. I see you can now buy screws that do not require a 'pilot' hole. In my day the timber being fixed required a clearance hole, whilst the timber being fixed to, required (but not always) a pilot hole. Can these screws be used without the need for a clearance hole,ie screwed straight through the timber being fixed.
Second question. I will be using hardwood decking for which is recommended stainless steel screws. The heads will stand out like a sore thumb, can anyone suggest a less visable alternative. Thanks Roy.

I`ve just finished decking the back garden and I used the type of screws you mentioned. The actual ones were Timberlok 4" with a hex head and they worked a treat, even with a £25 B&Q cordless. Bit expensive but worth the outlay I`d say.
