decomissioning old toilet

Howdy doo.

The mother-in-law wants the small understairs toilet got rid of (hardly gets used and she doesnt like the loud trumpeting noise when father-in-law does use it!).

I'm fine with moving plumbing etc, but was wondering if there was a particular way of closing off the toilet waste? It goes down into concrete floor and has the ceramic (?) collar thingy at the top of the pipe.


She wants the space as storage and the floor tiled.

Without see the job in hand, going off your discription.

I would decommission the plumbing leaving no dead legs, with the toilet remove and break out waste below floor level, 2" or so cap the soil pipe with something like this http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=101624&ts=31846&id=18082

Then make good the hole with sand and cement, ready for new floor covering.

if it's a salt glaze collar chances are the plastic cap on the last post might not fit properly, best way is to remove W/C, if you have to break it out, if it's cemented in, be careful not to loose any pieces of W/C down the old salt glaze, stuff bags down or something to block off the svp, once removed clean off to floor level, pack the top of the old pipe with newspaper to about two or three inches below floor level and then cement over the top, you should only need to use a few sheets of newspaper dont need to stuff it all the way down, just enough to support the cement until it's gone off.

Think that was pretty much the approach I was going to take, but just wanted to be sure!

So I don't need a 'strap-on boss' then? Just the mrs really wanted to see me ask big feller in Plumbstore for a 'strap-on boss' just so she could say; 'Don't call him 'boss'...'

Yeah, she's a wee bit peculiar!
