if you have the minimum of the same thickness either side extending 2ft [overlap ] each side and no intrusion [hole ] into the new bits appart from nuts bolts and dogs should be ok

now i am assuming this is for a spot light!!!!
if this is the case they should be several mm away from flamable material and possibly with a fire hood !!!
so best strengthen the jolist and move the light about 2 inches away from the wood
