I am in the process of laying a new patio and wanted to build a couple of raised rendered block planters in two of the patio corners (simple square patio 4x5m). I was planning on making them around 3ft high but would like to fix a bench seat between the two using 6x2 joists then capping that with deck boards.

what I'm not sure about is a single wall out of dense blocks strong enough for this (will seat around 4 people) and is it better to set the ends of the joists within the blockwork or fasten to the exterior once built? I suspect it will be fine as the joists in my house are this way and that seems to have stayed up  but would just like some opinions before i go ahead.

many thanks
Bob

i think you will be fine, there's structural beams all around the country holding up large walls above and many of these only bear onto 4 inch blockwork (with a pad stone)
