Designer ceilings (coving v false ceiling)

Would anyone still recommend the use of coving in a new development or extension or is that really yester-year fashion?

What about false ceilings with LED lights? Would it look somewhat odd to mix and match the two in different areas of a house?

Yes, it's in the same category as plastic ceiling roses, Avocado bathroom suites, and Artex.

I hear that they are removing the covings from Buckingham Palace. The false ceiling idea with LED lights, which I presume are down lighters are really a transient phenomina, and leave you with an unilluminated area at the top 18" of the walls. The only reason for down lighters is that for shops and the like they give a sparkly appearance to their goods.
