Without going into detail as to why a my relative's plastic cold water storage tank folded in half and poured scalding water through the ceiling- it needed it replaced pronto. Local choices were after xmas or, wait for it- £750!!!! I couldnt get there until Thursday- so they paid. And the man wanted to add vat. Talk about taking advantage of people in a fix.

forgive me while i go technical...

how the fkk does a cold water tank spill hot water ?

They moved house last week. Heating chooses when it will work, not the (suspect) programmer. They turned on immersion to guarantee hot water. Immersion stat duff. Boils over into cold tank. Cold tank sitting directly on joists with no support below. Full of boiling water folds in half. I believe the same scenario killed an old lady not too long ago when tank was above bed. Price didn't include a new immersion either!

unlikely, cos thats at least five minutes in boiling water.... but hey, i aint gary rhodes. ...

Wouldn't trust anything that bloke says on his website - too many spelling mistakes!

£750 for a tank for old folks, sounds good to me, £275.00 for job £475.00 to listen to them tell you how old they are a million times, whats the problem !!!!

Seems that Chris' instinct is justified. First thing I checked on Kearns' web site had a glaring error, a misrepresenting the law of the land! (the definition of competence, in case it's not obvious to all.)

And an empty tank needs quite a lot of p**s to fill it up too.

Hate to be miserable, but this is a serious problem. It did kill someone in Cornwall and his/her partner was hospitalised. The regs are now changed so that new immersion heaters now have an overheat stat that doesn't automatically reset itself, as well as the usual adjustable thermostat. New ones include this, but I understand it's not illegal to sell old stock without this feature. The cause of the death was determined to be a combination of a faulty 'stat AND a faulty installation. the installation was faulty because the F & E tank will withstand boiling water for a long time (500 hours?), BUT ONLY IF it's properly supported, e.g. not hanging over the edge of it's platform.
So, Brentwood better check those 2 points
