Didn't know had to resorn my car. Advice appreciated

I've an old car which broke down (engine clapped out) in '08 and has been kept in a garage since then. I'm pretty sure I sorned it off road but haven't since. As I recall I thought I didn't have to renew the sorn each year but recently found out that I do. From what I can tell that rule came in in '98? I've never received any tax renewal letters or sorn reminders so I never thought to check up on it until a relative pointed this out! So I'm now very worried.. 

Could someone knowledgable tell me what my options are? Am I going to be hit with some enormous fine and tax for the years its not been sorned? I've been on the dvla site but it's unclear to me what I should do?

I would think that if you go onto the DVLC web site it will tell you.

You should be able to check your SORN status on the DVLA website. https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s4

The DVLA are usually quick to send you a fine in the post if you forget to SORN. If they havent then you're either safe, they've got the wrong details for the car, or they're a bunch of bumbling incompetents.
Possibly more than one of the above is true

I think there are plans to end the lunacy of having to re-declare SORN every time the current period expires. (Not that it helps the OP)!

I am sure I heard that you now no lnger need to do this.
