Can anyone tell me why in some older houses that the joists are a different depth in upstairs bathrooms e.g. 100mm . And the other upstairs rooms have joist depths of approx. 200mm. Lot more difficult to hide pipework underfloor as you cannot notch 100mm joists. Was it just a cost saving measure?

a 4"x2" joist will have the same strength over a 6 foot span as say a 8x2 over an 9ft 6" span
if you have small joists in the down stairs room you save 4 inches then the same upstars you save 8"
you rear L shaped roof is 3 bricks lower saving 200 bricks
the back roof is now 10" lower so about 12" shorter so less wood and a few less tiles thats on top off the 50% less wood used on joists in the rear L shaped part
