I need to remove some soil next to the house wall for a decking job. It is a victorian terrace and I need to dig down 2 courses from the original soil level. Will this be possible? Thanks.

2 courses should be fine.

but as it is a Victorian house, dig a small pit first and see how far you dig before the wall spreads out.

It is probably built with brick footings, where the base of the wall is thicker to spread the weight. It might be a couple of feet down. You must not weaken the soil here. Some old houses have very shallow foundations.

If you have a cellar the base of the wall could be 10feet or so below the surface so will be unaffected by your digging.
