Have you put wires into the terminals at the back of the socket ?

If the answer is yes then youhave created a serous hazard. Turn of the power and remove the new wires, tighten the connections on the wires that were there before and put the socket back. In short put back the way it was.

Turn the power back on an call an electrian to fit the lamp properly,

You have destroyed the dimmer by connecting directly across the supply.

1. Your dimmer switch is now truely broken. It will be a minor miracle if it will work, connected correctly.

2. Look how you wired it. When the switch is off, theres a link from Neutral in to neutral out, as they are in the same hole. The same applies to the live. So the light comes on. Now turn the switch on, and theres a dead short between the live and neutral, this would normally blow a plugtop fuse. There is no live and neutral on light switches. NEUTRAL NEVER GOES TO LIGHT SWITCHES. LIVE AND SWITCHED LIVE. You have to accomodate the neutral elsewhere.

3. Where does the electricity come from? A PLUG top or a SOCKET back?

I AM PUTTING A LIGHT IN MY VIVARIUM SO BASICLY I AM GETTING MY POWER FROM A PLUG SOCKKET TO A DIMMER TO THE LIGHT

The LIVE IN goes to COM.

The LIVE OUT goes to L1.

NO OTHER WIRES connect directly to the switch mechanism.

See the WIKI (link at top of this page) for diagrams.

Still worried about how you have taken the supply. Is the cable rated to the protective device??
