I tried to replace a two way switch in my hallway with a double dimmer switch and wired it up as follows - L1 blue, L2 yellow, brown - common and in the second gang red in L1 and red in common. I didthis as it was the way the switch was wired before. It seemed to work apart from one dimmer controls both lights!

I then went to the upstairs switch and noticed that that was not working properly either. You can only use the upstairs light when it is turned on first by the downstairs light. The upstairs light is wired L1 = red and blue, L2 = yellow and brown and red in the common. I have tried many combinations and cannot work it out.

Someone help me please!!!!!!

The switch at the top of the stairs would appear to be OK, so that means its opposite switch in the hallway needs to match. As the upstairs switch has no brown wire, try swopping the red from common on the other single switch for the brown. If that doesn't work then it's probably the other red in L1.
If neither works you'll need a multimeter to start identifying which cable goes where.

It is not uncommon to confuse the terminals of switch gangs, especially as they often appear as two sets of three, top and bottom of the switch.

The usual layout is one terminal at the top is associated with two at the bottom, and the other two at the top are associated with the remaining terminal at the bottom.
