I messed up. I forgot to write down how the upstairs single switch was wired.

ok downstairs is double switch, operates down lights and upstairs lights.
upstairs is single switch operates only upstairs lights.

double is wired yellow L2 Blue common on one switch
other is deep red L1 black L2 and red common.

upstairs was yellow to common. thats all I remember.
other wires are deep red red blue and black.

can't get upstairs to work independently now but it did. have tried countless combinations.

Help please.

a picture paints a thousand words..
we will be able to help better if you post photo's of the wiring, including the cables in the backbox, not just the switch itself so we can see what wires go to what..

And that's how the downstairs switch was always wired? You've not replaced it, or moved any of the connections?

Did you look here to learn how 2-way switching works?

Once you know how it works you should be able to use your multimeter to identify the conductors and thus wire it up correctly.

drawing will not do.. it's the same info as you told us and still doesn't help us to identify which wires come from what cable..

we need an actual photo..

easy.

downstairs:

switch1: from the 3core, connect red to COM and black to L1.

switch 2: From the 4core, connect yellow to COM, red and blue to L1 and L2.

upstairs:

leave alone.

This SHOULD work.

That lightswitch would never had worked wired how it was (if my theory is correct)

downstairs switch hasn't been touched..
it's only the upstairs that he's taken off..
or so he says..

oh and that metal lightswitch should be earthed, they don't just put the earth lug on for fun you know..

I was just editing to say that..

at a guess, either it didn't work right in the first place, or it's been wired funny at the light..

get us a picture of the wiring in the light..

try steves way first..

well i've given him a standard method of wiring this setup, but i highly doubt that downstairs switch was like that originally.
