Dimmer Switch for low voltage halogen lights

Hi

I've just fitted 8 x 240v mains dimmable 50w halogen down lights. To control the lights I've used a high quality 2 gang dimmer switch (4 lights per gang). The problem I have is this:

1. When the lights are dimmed the dimmer switch hums/buzzes - I am guessing that this is due to the resistance

2. If the lights are on for a long time the dimmer switch gets quite warm

Is the above normal or do I have a faulty switch? I know there are very mixed views regarding dimmer switches.

Switch is geting hot because you are overloading it.
You need to fit a 2gang 400W dimmer.
In general if you have 200W halogen lighting, double the size of your dimmer

400w per gang? or 2x200w? you need 400w per gang.

It is normal, however, for dimmers to get warm when dimming, and they do buzz. The buzzing should be discreet though - not noticable above the TV, say.
