Dimmer Switch Query

Right I ve got a 1 gang 1 way light switch in the living room ,I ve happened upon a 1 gang 2 way dimmer switch can this be fitted ? I tried it earlier today but got no joy ,if it will work which terminals do i wire to ?

Its a metal plate I ve got a red wire going to the common on original switch ,Black going to terminal at bottom and earth wire to back box

New plate has terminals L1 L2 and a funny offset line with earth terminal on plate Any help would be appreciated

Red wire to the terminal with the arrow/squiggly line, black to L1 (should really have a red sleeve too). I prefer to run the earth to the switch earth terminal and loop to the metal back box as some back box earth terminals aren't great.
