Hello

My friend has a Dimplex CXL 22N storage heater and has been told 2 of the elements are broken.

I'd like to replace the elements myself, and having read the service manual, the job looks quite straightforward.

However I don't know which 2 out of the 4 elements are broken, so how do I test them?

Is it safe to switch on the storage heater with front cover and bricks removed to see which elements heat up?

Or can you pass a small battery current through each element in turn to see which 2 don't make a circuit?

Thanks

You need to go to somewhere like Screwfix or Tool Station and get yourself a cheap multi meter (approx 4 quid)

Isolate elec supply to the heater, remove cover, and probably some bricks. Disconnect the connections to each element, set the meter to resistance (Ohms), and put one of the meter's probes on one end of the element, and the other probe on the other end of element.

The elements with maximum resistance are broken. The ones with lowest resistance figure are fine.

Bit dodgy doing it with live mains to heater, as there is some dismantling (ie. brick removal) which will make testing unsafe.

Try posting this on the electrics section of this forum if you need more help.
