dimplex storage heater XT12 not heating/over heating?

We have a second hand dimplex storage heater XT12. When first installed was working ok on level 2 for about a week, turned dial up to level 3 heater failed to heat up overnight this went on for 3 nights no heat. Last night left heater on again turned back down to level 2 as this worked previously,this morning heater was red hot and smelly. Can anyone explain the problem and what we can do to rectify it.

Have it repaired by someone who knows what to do or replace it.

If it got red hot then it is a serious fire risk / serious injury risk and should be disposed of as scrap immediately. Wreck it so it cannot be used if someone decides to recyle it from the rubbish heap.

If was not red hot but just very hot and smelly then internal damage has almost certainly been done so again scrap it.

I always worry about storage heaters - they operate at night when all the occupants are in bed, anything could happen - at the end of the day it is an electric heater, and many "regular" electric convector heaters will say in the instructions that it should not be used unattended.

When it was moved from it's previous location, was it dismantled and then reassambled properly? Or did someone lug it around with the bricks inside?
Moving storage heaters with the bricks in is a sure way to destroy them.

YEs is was dismantled ok and the bricks were removed for transit.
I think i require a new part to stop the over heating any suggestions any-one?

The 'new part' required is probably the thermostat, however as bernardgreen says, the whole heater needs to be looked at to make sure it is all working properly.

You say the thermostat would that be the thermostat and cutout part?

The thermostat and cutout might be a single combined unit, or they could be separate items. All depends on the particular model of heater.

However there may be other problems, impossible to know without seeing it.
