DISHWASHER WONT COMPLETE WASH CYCLES

I have a Zanussi dishwasher - model number zt 6905.

It has 4 wash programmes and a rinse/hold programme.

The problem is that when it is set to any of the wash programmes they are never completed ie the dishwasher seems to stop mid cycle and the water does not drain from the machine. The water left in the machine mid -cycle is cold.

To drain the water from the dishwasher I run the rinse hold programme which does complete its cycle.

Would be grateful if anyone could suggest what is causing this malfunction and suggest the best way to fix it.
