Hello everyone,

I've just got my own unfurnished, completely bare and empty flat and alas I do not have any DIY competent friends/relatives that are within easy reach so I'm slowly attempting to learn the ropes myself.

I'm aiming to do what I hope is a reasonably simple (albeit unusual) job but need to defer to some of your knowledge and expertise and would hugely appreciate any pointers you can give me.

I'll try and keep this simple to save time but if you need any further information just ask.

I have 3 large floor to ceiling windows in the flat. In the lounge area (see image 1) there are 2 of these. An inward opening tilt and turn window, and a large static window made by Nordan: http://www.nordan.co.uk/windows/all-windows/18-fixed-light

I spent a lot of time researching the perfect pleated blinds for the flat that will fit on the windows, in the recess and provide 2 levels of light (gentle diffusion and also blackout) and finally found the ideal set. The blinds have a maximum drop of 220cm which is fine for the 2 tilt and turn windows, however the for the large static window - the drop is slightly too large at 228cm.

What I want to do is to attach two 4cm high blocks of wood into both the top and bottom of the window frame that will allow these blinds to attach to and fit (see image 2).

I have accurately measured the sizes required and have mocked up a very basic 3D image of the dimensions (see image 3,4,5).

As far as I can tell the window frame is made of Timber (and 'vacuum impregneration' according to the specs).

My plan is to get the two bits of wood custom cut by a provider such as here: https://www.timbersource.co.uk/cut-size-planed

(Does it matter what type of wood?)

Then paint the 2 pieces the same shade of white as the window frame.

Then drill the 2 bits of wood into the Timber window frame at the top and bottom using screws such as these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/fischer-screws-5-x-60mm-100-pack/76305

(Should I be using a different type?)

And then finally potentially hide the screw heads using these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/POZI-SCRE...076520&hash=item2ed132edc3:g:EX4AAOSwEK9TzhVN

Excuse any naivety, I really am new to all of this. Does this seem like a feasible thing to be doing? Are there any major things I should be taking into account (i.e where should I screw the screws/how many should I screw, how deep should I screw down into the window frame, should I be treating the wood at all or using a special type seeing as one side will be resting against glass?) and/or anything else worth mentioning.

Any help much appreciated. And feel free to ask any questions.

Thank you.

Hi Foxhole. I had a good look last night and I'm fairly sure it's timber. In fact there are a couple of openings for the locks and latches etc and I can actually see the timber inside (see attached).

Do you think this sounds like a feasible job?

First, ask the blind suppliers if there is any way to increase it to the size you need.
