I want to build some planters to grow some herbs and veg.

A lot of web articles on building planters seem to completely ignore drainage and have a solid base. Am I right in thinking it's wise to have drainage?

My plan was to make the base like a pallet. Then line with plastic, poke holes in the bottom where there's no wood. Then fill the bottom of the plastic with pea gravel, before filling with soil.

Sound good? is there a better way ?

Sounds about right to me, I have done similar in the past using decking boards. Like all wooden planters they have a limited life, but you should get 6 to 8 years out of them.
