Wiring outside light directly into internal socket

I plan to use 1.5mm 3 core flex cable

However to get to the socket I need to get along a approx 2.5-3m length of skirting

Can I secure the wire to the skirting using 8mm cable clips or do I have to use trunking?

You could use clips if you’re happy with how it looks.

Wiring it directly to the socket? I hope you mean flex into a plugtop, or a fused spur next to the socket?

From you comment, I get the feeling that clips are seen as a crap job :D

What's the alternative/ nicer job?

And yes, flex into a plugtop with 3amp fuse

That's the BT way (clips along any available woodwork).
Neater solution is go through the wall near your socket, then up the outside wall then across. Clips or conduit outside, whichever you like.
Neatest would be install an FCU next to or instead of the socket, go through the wall behind that. Or chase the vertical/horizontal into the plasterwork but that's a load of work.
