Just about to have kitchen fitted and now have a step going down into the room. Behind the step are the floorboards to the rest of the house and our builder recommended putting in a louvre vent at the bottom of the step to help with ventilation in the kitchen.

The issue is that our kitchen has no door leading into the rest of the house to the extractor fan will be able to pull the air from all over and secondly the kitchen does get quite cold at this time of year so, even with underfloor heating, the room may get cold.

What do people think? I've got no problem in installing the louvre vent if it is essential otherwise do the negatives outweigh the positives?

Thanks.

dave - my view is not to do it. If you go ahead you'll be drawing cold air from the void below floor (this sub-floor area is likely to vented to the outside via airbricks) into the kitchen space. Later, if you find there's a problem, have a second look at this vent idea.
