A club i belong rents an old church from the Historic chapels trust and we have had a new supply put in. We have ripped out the old wiring because it is years old. Can we do the new installation ourselves and does Part P apply to us. The supply is a 35amp spur off the main supply to another church. The club is a ltd not for profit company.

Is the supply shared with a dwelling?

Are you confident that you are competent enough to design and install everything properly?

Do you have the test equipment that you should have for testing the installation?

Do you or the landlord have any buildings, contents or public liability insurances which may require that the work only be done by a qualified/registered electrician?

Does the club have a public entertainment licence ?

If so it would fall under local authority duristicion.

there is no dwelling. the church itself is just used as a workshop/storage area.
we have an electronics engineer who knows what he is doing but is not Part P certified.
We do not have any test equipment and i do not believe it has buildings insurance. The building itself is wooden.

Even though part p doesn't apply, as a company your club has a duty of care to employees, members and members of the public that it is safe. Being a non-profit making enterprise doesn't change this, if you kill someone your club members will end up in court just the same!!
In order to ensure the electrical installation is safe you need to know exactly what you are doing. It will also need to be inspected, tested and certified in compliance with a standard such as the IEE regs 17th edn.
