In the USA, it is not just about knowing the law. Even though they have a written constitution, there are huge grey areas. It was written 250 years ago and the world nowadays would have been unimaginable to the founding fathers. So, much of it comes down to interpreting the constitution and there are sometimes massively different ideas about what it actually means.
