Political assistants are unelected politicians, not independent experts. The penny’s dropped that there is no money and no ideas so they are recruiting someone they can externalise the risk to when it all goes wrong.

Councils employ experts, like central government does through the civil service, political assistants are like SPADS. But this lad seems completely out of his depth when he realised there is more to service delivery than sound bites and election leaflets.
