Hi,

I would like to block up the back door in my house. I've not done any building work before. Should I attempt this or should I get someone to do some/all of it for me? I'm guessing the plastering will definitely not be a DIY job if I want it flat.

Any ideas what it would cost to get someone in to do it?

Thanks,

J

Stoneboy,
Get it done by a tradesman, building and plastering.. There's more to it than you think.... as for the cost, who knows, ask locally. Shouldn't be any problem for a builder to do. Get a couple of quotes though to give you some idea.

Roughcaster.

Thanks roughcaster. The more I thought about it the more I thought it would be a bad idea so have phoned some builders. One came over today and quoted £300. Does that sound reasonable? Will wait to see what the others say anyway.

if the outer brickwork is going to be visible, i.e. not rendered, then make sure the builder is allowing for toothing out of the existing bricks and that you approve a suitable match.

300 rips, snatch his hand off.

It is going to be rendered.

The guy does the building work for a double glazing firm and does the odd job by himself when it's quiet. He said it would be 2 days work and if the double glazing firm hired him they would charge us about £700. Sounded too good to be true, which always gets me suspicious, but sounds like he was on the level.

Thanks very much for this.
