On one edge of the door there's generally a solid bit marked 'lock block' and the hinges go on the other edge.

If you have purchased a hollow door the lock block side, generally on the top. There are a few doors out there with two lock blocks, but very, very few

look at the top of the door it should say 'lock' thats the side for the lock.
or iirc it was the side where the writing was.
little trick,once you know mark the top of the door face with a H for the hanging side.
