Door knob stiff and turns wrong way

I've just fitted a new latch and door knob to an internal door (the old one was sticky).

But the door knob turns the 'wrong' way i.e you have to turn it clockwise, towards the doorframe to open. It feels counterintuitive. It's also incredibly stiff, and with wet hands I can't open it at all.

I think the latch I've fitted isn't the best. I'm guessing I've bought one that was meant for a door knob that sits on the other side of the door?? But I'm not sure how to source a replacement, as I don't think latches include a description of which way they 'turn'?

Normally latches will work both ways.
If you can post a couple of pictures, that might give us a better idea.
