Door lining and skirting sanding advice

Hi all,

I've had to sand a door lining back to bare wood due to the old gloss on it peeling.

I sanded it down with 40 grit, what grit do I need to work back upto before applying acrylic primer, I'm guessing 120?

Secondly, I need to rub down our old staircase which currently has gloss on it, I'm guessing oil based but I didn't paint it originally, what grade sand paper will it need, we will be refinishing it with satinwood paint.
