Trying to resurrect the doorbell in our new (victorian) home.

Located the transformer and more obviously the door bell button and chime.

Pressing the button rings the bell once.

What am I missing? Should there be some form of relay (like a flasher unit on a car hazards lights)?

I have attached photos of the bell. Like I say, one press = one ring.

Ps, ignore the brown wires - those are only there for testing!!

Do the contacts separate or are they still touching when the clapper hits the bell?

If so, slacken the screw slightly.

Have you checked to see that these contacts do actually separate?

They might be stuck together (hopefully with grot, not welded), or the adjustment screw might need screwing out.

First or second, you are both right. The screw was holding the two contacts together. I have backed it off one turn and the bell continuously rings - hoorah!!

Many thanks
