Dormer roof supported by one piece of wood?

Is this diagonal timber actually supporting the roof on the other side or just left for convenience of building a stud wall?
Behind this is a large dormer bedroom with no rafters for 5 meters

That's a structural stud wall.

Well it's not now, so best get the plasterboard back on quickly
 
Diagonal members are there to provide racking stability. I would suggest this is a structural/load bearing wall - even if it is not carrying load vertically it is giving lateral strength (buttressing) to something.
