Having aquired a work but some what 'project house' ive recently found by opening up the side of the bath and an access hole in the kitchen ceiling that it has two layers of floor boards.

4.5inch wooden t&g boards laid perpendicular to the joists, then a second layer, perpendicular to that, over the top.

The house is a 1940's ex-council build and given theres no noticable step, i presume, like this throughout. if not orignal, the second layer is certianly not new.

Never seen it before, just wondering is it was common, a bodge because the orignal board where a bit shot or what.

Cheers, Daniel.

if the bathroom is on a short span they may have used smaller joists giving a step down so they doubled up on the floor to give greater support for the bath

there is no sensible reason to lay 2 structural layers off floor it just wastes time and money

Obviously it makes for a nice firm footing for the bath and anything else, im certainly not complaining, but as you say it otherwise appears a waste of time and money.

The bath room is about the same size as the three bedrooms (circa 10*12ft) which each form a quater of the 1st floor. Infact what I forgot at the time was that what is now the bathroom used to be a fourth bedroom, with the bath room being on the ground floor.

Im curious now to find out if the rest of the rooms have the floorboards doubled up, and if not, how that works regaurding maintaining a level floor upstairs (all hard floors, no noticable step or uneaveness).

So far, ive gone in through the ceiling anyway, as being all laminate floor on top is enough of a barrier anyway.

Will have a look under a corner tongith if get chance.
