We've just had a quote of £4,400 to replace 10 windows in our semi detached house, and the guy (who came very highly recommended) said he could do them all as triple glazing for an extra £300 for all windows

Is this something worth considering? We plan to stay in the house for many years

Ask him what the U-values are for whatever double and tripple glazing constructions he is proposing.
Then you can work out how much heating energy you will save.

£4700 for 10 triple glazed windows. Go for it.

It should bring the U-value down to about 1 for the area (from about 1.6), so makes a small difference to heat loss. It will however reduce noise from outside quite a bit, if that is a problem.
