double pole/single pole dilemma!

I have just realised that I've replaced an old brass socket which was double pole, with a plastic socket which is only single pole!
All the wires seemed to wire up in exactly the same way.
Is this a problem and do I need to change it to a plastic double pole socket?
Its all a bit confusing for us novices!!

if you mean it had a double pole switch on the old socket it will be fine except when you switch off the switch on the socket you will be breaking the live connection only not the neutral as well
