Hi just wondering if its possible to somehow put a dpc in a single block wall?...im guessing with no wall ties to an adjacent wall then it is not possible as the wall will be unstable.
Is there alternatives?
Cheers,
Martin.
No problem putting dpc on a single block wall, thermalite blocks are usually only single skin I believe the weight of the block sustains the integrity.
Pete
Yes it is fairly straightforward but time consuming. What you need to do using a masonry blade in a nine inch grinder, grind out the length of one brick at one end, slip in a piece of dpc(ie marley etc), fill the joint with sand cement mortar. Move to the other end and repeat and depending on how long the wall is one or two in the middle but no closer than two metres apart. Allow the mortar to cure for at least 3 days. Then grind out another set of random bricks. When you do the bricks next to ones you have already done mind to lap the dpc. By using this method the structural integrity of the wall should be retained
Hey symptoms are just a v damp wall..its a single block boundary wall(site boundary and garage wall) that is not rendered....any bit of rain and the whole things damp!
I think you're assuming that the damp is rising, and IMHO this is not the cause.
You have a wall that I surmise is never heated on either side, and one side is exposed to the elements. Absorbancy of the bricks depends on their type and age, and the type and condition of the mortar, so is it not possible that this wall contains a lot of water and that it never dries out?
Have you checked that that the roof isn't leaking onto the top of the wall?
Have you considered just rendering the wall and then applying some weather proofing?
Hey you could be dead right the roof is leaking and is being replaced...this is why i asked the question..thought id get this seen to @ the same time as doing roof.
Aslo yeah gargae never been heated in 50 years of existence.
Maybe ill just leave it so!
