Hi chaps,

I need to run temporary services - dishwasher + washing machine - while I build a new extension. Theoretically I could use my cold water drain cock as the connection for these temporary services - is there any reasons why not?

Secondly, could I not permanently extend from this drain cock for the new extension, fitting a new draincock on the outside of the extension?

Cheers,

James.

drain cocks usually leak and dribble. Even the glanded ones are not immune.

it is a screw-fit or soldered on?

a bit of DIY plumbing would not take long to do it properly

Cheers for getting in touch JohnD,

Its a screw on.
Only the actual draincock is exposed through the wall, the compression fitting (somehow)is just within the hole in the brickwork, so I would struggle to reach it. It then goes under a wooden floor which has got kitchen cabinets above that I cannot move - just to make it less useful.

How do you know that it is cold water?

It would be very unusual for any plumber to fit a drain off to the cold supply that goes outside, this would be more likely to be a central heating drain point. I agree that it would be easier and more practical to cut a tee in somewhere accessable, maybe under the sink? this could be pushfit, and a length of pipe run to wherever you want.

I actually have three drain - cocks, one I have identified as the heating. The other two I was going to try and identify through basic pressure tests on tas around the house.

Good point though, I could run pushfit from my kitchen sink, out through a wall and then use them for the permanent supply required when the extension is complete.

Cheers.
James.
