Morning.

When the bath drains, or the upstairs wc is flushed, this causes the water in the downstairs wc to bubble. The downstairs wc also does not drain properly when it is flushed; the bowl fills with water and drains slowly.

Is this a blocked drain outside? If so, I take it we need dyno-rod or someone out pretty smartish to clear it? We are the end house of four sharing a drain to the mains. I don't think there's a manhole cover outside until you get to the road. Will any of this cause more problems? Any advice on what to expect is much appreciated.

Thanks all :)

yes sounds like you have a blockage in you sewer drainage between downstairs wc and drain.

Is there anybody there???

Blimey, patience, we have jobs to do you know and we aren't nocturnal either...

It'll be a blockage as you and seco have suggested. As for what to expect, if you call DynoRod expect a very large bill, might be worth trying a local plumber or independent drain clearance specialist first. Also expect a lot of sh*t and some loo roll

Worth having a look at the soil pipe, some have round access covers a few inches above ground level.
Have you any other drain points outside that is connected. I managed to gain access through a drain using a extension on a jet washer.
On a different occassion the council came out to open up a blockage, it was not on my property, so I did not get charged but there was supposed to be a charge.

I've got gravel out the front so I assumed there wasn't a manhole... now I think about it, when my neighbours took the turf up to gravel theirs, there was a manhole cover, so I might have one after all.

I'll try the bottle of clever stuff I've bought, plunge it some more, and hope for the best... and failing all that, get a chap over next week!

if you end up getting a chap over next week make sure you have located any buried drain lids first.

if i get told that when i turn up for a job jetter gets packed away and off we go

Right you are, thank you.

If the property was built before 1936, have a look on your local authority web site. Pre '36 private sewers can be the responsibility of The Utility.
