How stiff should a upvc door handle get before you're risking damaging the mechanism?

There's lots of topics here on draughts but isn't it a toss up?
You can adjust the cams and keeps on your door so that the door is pulled tight against the seal when the lock is engaged.

However, there's a risk this is putting a lot of force on the gearing.

In the past I couldn't be bothered to get round to adjusting a door and this lead to the gearing going.
In this case you often had to try and lift the handle twice which is a telltale sign of a door about to die.

You can adjust the doors so that they pull tight, but this can make lifting the handle very stiff.
It can also make lowering the handle harder.
If this is the case has draught-proofing gone too far?

I don't know if this makes any sense, but I'd say it can be slightly stiff as long as it can still be raised in a smooth motion.
