Drop valve flush button: pushrods cut too short. Fixable?

Installing a drop-valve WC I managed to cut the two plastic pushrods that operate the flush mechanism about 5mm too short. Can anyone think of a solution here and what I might be able to do as a getaround?

Self tapping screw in the end of the rod.
