I'm planning to dry line(using battens) and insulate the external solid walls in my house. House is old, bricks are knackered and not at all level.

Problem is knowing the most efficient, cost effective method. There seems to be a couple of ways.

1. Batten out with 3x2", insulate between battens with kingpsan and plasterboard.

This seems appealing as erecting 3x2" studding is far far quicker as it does not require to be fixed to the wall to level it out. But then you've all the insulation to cut to fit between studs.

2. Batten out with 2x1" and fixed insulated plasterboard on top(K18)

This is depicted in the K18 info sheet. Fixing 2x1" battens directly to the wall seems more time consuming as the walls are not even and each timber would require packing out level. Also, the cost of insulated plasterboard seems very expensive. Of course the benefit is the insulation is continuous and fixing insulation and plasterboard is done in 1 job.

Does any have experience of the methods above and which would you recommend for speed and cost?

Speed wise insulating on dabs will be quickest but the cost can even out if you have tradesman in doing the work. If you're DIY then your time is cheaper. You will also be able to lose most irregularities in the wall doing it on dabs.

Not sure why you think you haven't got to fix 3x2's to the wall if you go that route?

You could always try using gyproc studs- you attach brackets to the wall and level up the studs then fix through the brackets so you can go as close to the wall or further away depending on thickness of insulation.
