Been doing a few bits and bobs at my mothers new house - a modern persimon house made largely of carcboard and glue.

Fixing up paintings and was worried about which fixings to use.

Never having lived in a modern house before, I was not sure how best to fix to cavity walls.

Once I got the knack, I found these to be the best.

I tried a few other options and made a bit of mess at times.

Using the gadget that draws back the screw so that the back pinches and binds to the back of the plasterboard take a few tries.

They are fairly common in some trades, such as shop fitting. You'll find references to then peppered around this site , the common name for them being "umbrella" fixings. As you say, best installed with a setting tool. Rawl and Fischer brand fixings ste generally better quality than unbranded fixings
