You need good eyesight to drive a gritter, you need to be able to see if the oncoming car is expensive looking in time to turn the spray setting to max machine gun mode.
I wear specs every day, have done since being a teenager. Your distance vision doesn't normally change much in your lifetime. Have you had an eye test before? It's possible you've been in need of specs for ever, and will get to experience the world in full detail for the first time when you get some.

Don't waste your money on Specsavers' crap glasses. They'll escort you to the showroom after your eye test, it's a carefully organised scam to fleece you of £200+ for some Chinese frames with bog standard lenses. I've been getting mine online for many years, they're every bit as good or better for a fraction of shop prices.

Highly recommended. You can get 5 frames to try for free, try them on and post them back for nothing. You can do this without a prescription. Then order properly with your prescription after your eye test. Been getting all my specs there for over 10 years.
There are other similar sites too. But I know this lot are good so I stick with them. Sign up for email marketing, you'll get regular offers, keep an eye out for the big discounts - up to 50% off everything with free delivery. Plus you get a free second pair. I typically pay £30-£50 each, ordering two pairs at once. There are usually good discounts for your first order anyway. For your first specs, get a clear pair and some sunglasses.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with them, they're every bit as good as any high street optician's specs. They just don't have the massive overheads of a shop and staff etc.
Opticians have become granny-fleecing operations these days. Charge as much as possible to those who don't know better.
In the 90s, in one of the pubs I used there was a regular who worked for the council called Gary. He did gritting duty in the winter. His nickname.......................

Booked in at spec savers for Monday afternoon. She just told me I can wear my reading glasses for the test !!!!! Another reason that the other medical place is a scam.

Charging me £35 for the test and the optician will fill out the rest of my form so guaranteed a pass with an optician as they will give me glasses to pass the test with I assume.
My vet doesn't charge me for an eye test..
Reading glasses won't help at distance, they're likely to make your vision more blurred.
Or you could say it's a carefully organised successful business model designed to maximum profits
