I fitted new chrome switches can anyone say if it makes a difference if the earth wire is connected to the switch its self or the back box.

My preference is to connect it to the switch plate, and have a flylead to the box. That means that when wiring it, or if you take it off to decorate, polish the back of it or hide your stash, the T/E cable is going to one place, not two, and if the flylead should come off the dangly item you can easily touch is still earthed.
