Does the earth wired in the cord for a washing machine earth the appliance or do I have to earth it in some other way as well? I know I'm dumb but I don't want to burn the house down.
If there is an earth wire on the supply lead (power cord) on the appliance it will be connected to the machine to earth it down.
If you want to be perfectly sure then use a multimeter or continuity tester and touch one lead to the earth on the plug and the other lead to a piece of exposed metalwork (normally an unpainted screw on the back of the appliance) if you have continuity the earth is connected. Ensure the machine is unplugged before doing this.
Generally if the earth is not connected inside the appliance it would have a 2 core lead attached (why would the manufacturer pay to put 3 core on which costs more than 2 core if the earth is not being used)
