Hi,

We have a new RCDs fuseboard installed in the flat

Our electrician is telling us that we run an earth cable from the fuseboard to the gas pipe, from the fuseboard to the water pipe of the boiler and from the fuseboard to the bathroom. The later connection is a real pain as we need to cross to rooms to do it.

Is all these earthing required to get the installation certified even with the RCDs?

Thanks

10mm sq bonding is required for gas pipe and for water pipe, both run from the main earthing terminal for the house (norm adj the mains head) to within 600mm of the water stop cock and the gas meter.

Provide rcd and local protection tests in the bathroom are inside scope there is not requirement to provide an earth to the bathroom pipes.

Presumaby this is stating that the resistance from any pipe to the main earth terminal of the installation must lie outside the range 1666 - 23000 Ohms, (give or take certain assumptions), else supplementary bonding is required.

ED: word 'supplementary' added to make it clear I was replying to:
What do you mean by local protection tests?

Bonding is not required in the bathroom:

If all the circuits in the bathroom (including lights) are RCD protected and the bonding to the water and gas supplies are there and up to spec.

It has never ever ever been a requirement to run an earth cable from the fuseboard to the bathroom pipes. This is more dangerous than not doing it.

If your electrician is suggesting that then I would question his competence.

You can read about Supplementary Equipotential Bonding in the WIKI.
