Thanks to your help recently I've got an order from TLC of a ropelight and various accessories: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Disco_Index/Duralite_Rope_Lights_LED/index.html

It includes push couplers and a power supply (see below) but the lead isn't long enough - I want to extend the distance between the control box and the ropelight.

So I need to make up some sort of lead which has the 3 pins on one or both ends. I haven't picked up a soldering iron in ~25 years and was never good at it, so what would be the easiest approach?

If you want to extend the cable between the control box and the rope light the only way you can achieve this is to cut the cable in the middle between the controller and rope light connector and extend it using suitable 3 core rubber flex (usually 1mm) and 2 x waterproof flex connectors. This is what you'll need:

I assume you want to do this rather than just using a waterproof extension as the controller would be out of reach where you intend to place the rope light?

@SUNRAY - There is no type of extension available for this type of cut to length rope light system.

Yeah I need to extend it between the controller and the rope. It'll be nasty moulded cable but cutting the cable and patching it makes sense. This is going to be a more permanent thing so I would probably do it using Wiska wall-boxes.
Thanks - sometimes the obvious thing is right in front of you and you don't see it!

Do they not sell a full range of parts for this product?

What happens when you purchase a cut length of light pipe, how do you make the connexions to it?

See the link in my first post. They stock couplers and power leads but not the bits to make your own - I'm sure someone more competent could make one easily enough but this is targeted at home users.

Drat, just realised I also need a gap in the rope-light at one point so I'll have to make a lead a couple of metres long with pins on each end. I'll see if the couplers can be taken apart and wired to a 3-core cable.

I feel there must be little push connectors you can use on each wire, very thin metal sleeves - but no idea what they're called. You sometimes see them on the ends of stranded copper wires in plugs to give a more robust attachment.

If you haven't already started modifying what you've had from TLC you might be best sending it back for a refund as its not really suitable for what you're trying to achieve without a lot of modifications and if water gets into your connections all the effort will be for nothing. What you need is this system:

https://www.festive-lights.com/outdoor-led-rope-light

You order the lengths you need and they will assemble it all for you so for example you'd buy a starter cable/multifunction controller, an extension, a length of rope light with an input connector on one end and an output connector on the other, another extension for the gap you want in the middle and then another length of rope light with an input connector on one end and a blank cap on the other. It'll all come premade so all you have to do is plug it together.

I use the connect pro system myself and it's brilliant, it's a bit more expensive than the stuff from TLC but it'll save you the faff of having to DIY that system yourself which would invalidate your warranty with them too don't forget.

Thanks that is quite neat. I'll give it some thought once I look at the bits I have. I'm confident I CAN figure it all out and do a competent job - did a run of outside lights learning about SWA glands last year - it's more about investment of time and learning curve steepness if I WANT to bother.
