I'm currently staying with my folks who are in their 80s and struggling with a major heating issue. Their 8-year old boiler, an Economaire 50 has been locking out every autumn/winter since they bought it, once the heating system is switched on. The lockout appears to happen randomly, and can kick in between twice a day and a few days. It can be re-started by pressing reset but this is far from ideal.
There have been countless engineers over the years from Force and Johnson and Starley, but the problem remains. According to the engineers this is a unique problem. We can't afford to replace the boiler but no-one seems to be able to fix it. Despite it being past its guarantee they have evidence that the boiler never worked properly from the start. Can anyone suggest the best plan of action, bearing in mind their ongoing frustrations and lack of finance to resolve this with a new boiler. David

So what do the engineers say the problem actually is?

All that we have been told is that it is a "unique problem".

If that was defined then we could think about it.

I already have one idea in my mind.

I think these have honeywell ignition PCBs that piggy back the gas valve. If so, its probably that.

These were fitted with a restrictor ring @ flue outlet , dependant on flue arrangement/length then the restrictor ring should be removed.

well get back on to J&S and tell them to check their records and that the fault still exists and that if they do not sort it then you will contact trading standards J&S are a decent company and will want to help you out, be prepared though that it could be fluing issue and if it is they might correctly charge you for the visit

I do wish the OP would say what the nature of the lockout fault is and what the flue is like.

Is it bound to have a balanced flue or could it still be an open flue?
