I read on an old thread someone suggest that egress hinges should be added to all bedroom windows.

I was wondering what the reason for this would be, if it's a good idea, and exactly how an egress hinge differs from other hinges?

Thanks!

Standard double glazed windows move toward the center of the opening to allow your arm to reach around the hinge side to clean.
This can restrict the size of opening to escape in a fire. Egress or fire escape windows open fully as they hinge tight to the frame. They usually have some fiddly plastic clips that can permit them to move over for cleaning (and pinch your fingers at the same time) in the same way as you can reach around standard windows.

As long as everyone in the house can fit through a standard window you are fine however if anyone is"well built" you might consider fitting them, my guess is they probably fit in place of standard hinges, but I have never done it. ;)

I was once told to think of it this way:

Its not so much if you can get out of a small gap during a fire, but more if you and your family have passed out due to smoke inhalation can a fireman get in with his breathing apparatus on?
