Hi,

I'm having some panel heaters installed in a basement flat but my electrician has said the fittings instructions say the panel needs 2m clearance above it !....this seems very excessive to me and wont be possible as the ceiling height is only 2.1M and i dont want them sitting on the floor.

If we can achieve 1.75M would people feel this is safe ?

TIA,
Mike.

Perhaps it's 2 miles.

Have you seen the instructions?
It does seem excessive.

Have you the make and model no . for a Google?

Normally only in the region 150mm clearance required, are you sure the installer has not misread and possibly the MI states 200mm/20cm/0.2m?
what make/model of heater is it?

Do some simple comparisons.

What is the wattage of the heaters?

What is the wattage of the sort of CH radiators you would have in a room that size if you had wet CH?

What sort of clearance do you normally see between CH radiators and ceilings?

The element is enclosed - what's it going to set on fire?

How hot do CH radiators get?

How hot do panel heaters get?

How much heat does a CH radiator output?

How much heat does a panel heater output?

How much clearance do you have above CH radiators (particularly vertical ones)?

The elements of convector panel heater get very hot, in excess of 200C. The ventilation slots on the top of the heater can get to over 100C.
According to EN 60335-2-30, the maximum temperature rise for a shelf fixed above a panel heater is 60K (about 85C absolute). Most panel heaters need a minimum distance of between 100mm and 200mm between the top of the heater and the shelf to achieve this limit. 2m does seem rather excessive, it may be a misprint

What is the make and model of the heater?

The ventilation slots on the top of the heater can get to over 100C.

The bottom one looks like an Adax Neo convector heater. It has ventilation slots on the rear which can get quite hot. It needs 150mm between the top of the heater and any shelf above. I know because I tested it... ;)
